The Bartimaeus Trilogy by Jonathan Stroud were my 12-year-old son's favorite books at the end of last year.The books in this series are The Amulet of Samarkand,The Golem's Eye, Ptolemy's Gate, and (the follow up) The Ring of Solomon.
They are rich in detail, imagery and humor. He couldn't stop reading them and finished them up pretty fast.
